jumanji the next level review
Jumanji: The Next Level combines two concepts. Like Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle our young heroes find themselves trapped in a video game in fully grown adult avatars of varying, shall we say, ability. They’ll need to beat the game in order to get out—and they need to do it without dying more than three times or they’ll die for real. The second concept is Grumpy Old Men.
The trapped in a video game plot builds off the 1995 Robin Williams-led Jumanji original. As a boy, Williams’s character was sucked into a board game. Decades later he pops back out and the jungle follows him into the real world, where he and several others have to finish playing the board game in order to send the jungle, and all its deadly denizens, back into the game.
The 2017 remake/sequel starring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan turned that premise on its head and upgraded the technology. The 2019 sequel doesn’t change the formula up much from there. Spoilers ahead.

When I first heard of a sequel, I thought that maybe we’d be getting something other than a video game or a board game—Jumanji, as a weird gaming entity, clearly has more than one form. It could be a collectible card game or a mobile game or any number of things. But JUMANJI MOVIE sticks with the video game and it works out just fine thanks to some clever twists.
Spencer (Alex Wolff) is unhappy ever since leaving Jumanji the first time. Life isn’t panning out the way he wants it to. He’s moved to New York and misses his friends and hates his job. He’s depressed. We discover that he’s kept the broken Jumanji console that they smashed up in the previous movie, and he finds a way to go back in. His friends later discover what he’s done and decide to go in after him, only the console is so badly busted up that they don’t even get to choose their avatars, and when they land in Jumanji everything is a mess.
This jumanji movie is because Spencer’s grandpa Eddie (Danny DeVito) and his old partner Milo (Danny Glover) have been sucked into the game as well, leaving Bethany (Madison Iseman) in the real world. Of all them, only Martha (Morgan Turner) is in the same avatar—Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan). Grandpa Eddie is in Dr. Bravetstone’s body, leading to a ridiculously funny performance by Dwayne Johnson emulating a very grouchy Danny DeVito in a very large body. Milo, meanwhile, ends up in Mouse Finbar, leading to the least Kevin Hart-like performance from Kevin Hart ever.
Fridge (Ser’Darius Blain) ends up in Professor Shelly Oberon (Jack Black) which he finds even worse than when he was stuck as Mouse, Bravestone’s weapon valet whose weaknesses include cake. “At least I was still black,” he groans.
Dwayne Johnson as Dr. Xander "Smolder" Bravestone.
Johnson also portrays Bravestone's father in a flashback scene in the film.
Jack Black as Professor Sheldon "Shelly" Oberon.
Kevin Hart as Franklin "Mouse" Finbar.
Karen Gillan as Ruby Roundhouse.
Nick Jonas as Jefferson "Seaplane" McDonough.
Awkwafina as Ming Fleetfoot - A new Jumanji avatar, whose character's background is a thief with skills in burglary, pick-pocketing and lock picking, and who has a weakness to pollen.
Rory McCann as Jurgen the Brutal - A new antagonist of Jumanji, who is an iron-fisted and arrogant warlord, responsible for murdering Bravestone's parents years ago.
Alex Wolff as Spencer Gilpin.
Ser'Darius Blain as Anthony "Fridge" Johnson - The character is referenced by others in the film primarily by his nickname.
Morgan Turner as Martha Kaply.
Madison Iseman as Bethany Walker.
Danny DeVito as Edward "Eddie" Gilpin - Spencer's grandfather. He is a retired diner owner following the sale of a diner he owned in Brantford, with little understanding of video games.
Danny Glover as Milo Walker - Eddie's estranged friend and a co-owner in the diner he owned with him, before its sale ended their friendship.
Colin Hanks as Alex Vreeke.
Rhys Darby as Nigel Billingsley
