shikara REVIEW
The putting is overdue 80s and the communal tension within the picturesque valley of Kashmir is growing at an alarming price with every passing day. Yet, literature enthusiast Shiv and his docile and demure spouse Shanti are satisfied that they are safe inside the neighborhood they have called home for many years now. But, as years skip by, the intensity of considerable nonsecular violence surpasses the supposition of the couple and that of hundreds of different Kashmiri Pandits, and then, they are stuck with the bad exodus of January 19, 1990. Standing at the edge of losing the whole thing they ever had, Shiva and Shanti at the moment are torn between equally hard choices – store their lives and leave at the back of their liked birthplace or live lower back and face the aftermath of a war in opposition to their community.
If it’s no longer already evident, Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ‘Shikara’ is an try and deliver to light the plight of Kashmiri Pandits and their insurmountable energy and courage within the face of adversity. Staying actual to the 90s generation and the hostility prevalent in the course of that period, Chopra, very systematically, rolls out his ancient romantic drama through a harmless love story between perpetual optimists. Then, blends it with the real-life story of the constant struggle between the Muslim extremists and the Kashmiri Pandits within the valley, eventually, wrapping it up with the theme he had originally commenced out with – how natural love can face up to many a battle, even of warfare and bloodshed. Throughout the movie, the writer-director throws in diverse subplots – both real and reel – without derailing from the central subject even once.
However, the narrative is a tad bit extra visually interesting and cinematically engaging inside the first half, as there are multiple factors to hold one guessing about what’s going to unfold. While the second 1/2 is greater investment in the love tale – which does sense far-fetched, predictable and dated at times. Also, thinking about it’s a historical drama, it's miles as an alternative disappointing to witness that the film does no longer passes beyond some fleeting mentions of the ordeal of the people from the other side of the incident; a one-sided approach. Not to mention, some parts of the screenplay of ‘Shikara’ seem all too convenient; nearly like it become written in haste to rush lower back to the subject matter of romance.
Debutants Sadia and Aadil Khan make an attractive pair to watch on screen. Sadia, along with her infectious smile, is herbal in quantities in which she is playing the more youthful part. Aadil’s depiction of a beginner poet does no longer resonate half of as lots as his portrayal of an older man.
The music and background score (A.R Rahman and Sandesh Shandilya) of ‘Shikara’ is like a balm for the soul, with able help from lyricist Irshad Kamil.
To sum it up, Vindhu Vinod Chopra’s ‘Shikara’ will cater to the cinematic sensibilities of a sure phase of the audience. As a love tale, it really works at a few levels, however, within the bigger picture, this old-college romance doesn't absolutely grip you and maintain you engaged for too long.
