It rarely ever happens that there is a stunned silence in a theatre full of film lovers even after the credits start rolling. And when that happens, be sure that the film has stirred something deep inside their soul. That’s what Abhishek Shah’s directorial debut Gujarati film Hellaro does to you. The film, which won the National Award for Best Feature Film earlier this year, released amidst heavy expectations from the audience as it became the first Gujarati film to get this honour. And it justifies the award with effortless ease.
A simple story told in a powerful way, dialogues that hit you hard and music with a lasting effect are well supported by brilliant performances, good choreography and cinematography that makes the vast, barren landscape of Kutch look beautiful.
Just like the story which is all about women and their courage to challenge the rules, the film belongs to the 12 actresses who overshadow their male counterparts onscreen. The performances, especially by Shraddha Dangar, who plays Manjhri and leads the way to take a stand are captivating. The actresses seem to have lived their characters as they make them look every bit real. Apart from these 12 shinning stars, actors Jayesh More, who plays the dholi (Mulji) and Maulik Nayak (Bhaglo) the only progressive man of the village puts up performances that are worth appreciating.
Abhishek has proven his worth as a filmmaker and the fact that this is his debut film makes this one really impressive. The very opening scene aptly captures the tone of the film as the men joyously do garba outside while the women longingly look from their guarded homes. The director has managed to create some touching moments with a deep impact. Moments like Arjan (Aarjav Trivedi) forcing himself on his wife Manjhri only to immediately leave to do garba outside as the song Mangi Leje Sapna Vina Ni Khali Raat plays in the background or when Mulji thinks of his daughter in the penultimate scene and says “Naach Reva, Have Tari Vaari” are some moments that clearly stand out.

The music by Mehul Surti further lifts the film with the voice of Aditya Gadhavi and the lyrics by Saumya Joshi (who has also written the dialogues) making the songs rich and textured. The choreography truly reflects the emotions. The fact that Jayesh More actually knows to play the dhol further enhances the realistic feel during some very important scenes. Attention to details adds to the beauty of the film. And subtle humour in between tense moments brings the change in mood.
Overall, Hellaro is a beautifully made film that ends in euphoria, not just onscreen but in the hearts of the audience as well. A must-watch for all those who enjoy good cinema.
